Progress is continuing on Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the Cypress Creek watershed. Rainwater harvesting systems are completely installed at Blue Hole Regional Park and Hays County Precinct 3 office, all they need is rain! We are currently in the process of recruiting volunteers to design and install a native-scape at the Precinct 3 facility to be irrigated by the system. If you are interested in helping out with this project, please contact Nick Dornak at 512-213-7389.
Design and construction of rainwater harvesting systems and raingardens at the Woodcreek golf course and Wimberley Valley Watershed Association continues through August. As-built photos, educational signage and other additions are soon to come!
Additional funding will be required to implement watershed protection plan management measures as the Cypress Creek Project moves into years 4 through 6 of implementation. To this end, The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment has secured partner commitments and matching funds for a three-year funding proposal to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The proposal, if selected for funding, includes continued watershed coordination, outreach programs, BMP construction and a long-term sustainability plan. The full proposal will be available on the Cypress Creek Project website here soon.
Finally, in an effort to mitigate damage to critical riparian habitat, native plants and wildlife, agricultural lands and the resulting impacts on water quality, The Meadows Center has partnered with three Central Texas counties to develop the Central Texas Feral Hog Task Force. Programs include a feral hog bounty, workshops, landowner cooperative trapping, damage assessments, a website and social media platform. More information on the Hays County program can be found in the press release below or by visiting the project website at www.feralhogtaskforce.com.
